Turkish System of Government: Parliamentary Republic
The politics of Turkey take place in a framework of a strictly secular Parliamentary Republic where the Prime Minister of Turkey is Head of Government and of a multi-party system. The President of Turkey is Head of State and holds a largely ceremonial role with substantial reserve powers.
Turkey's political system is based on a separation of powers. Executive power is exercised by the Council of Ministers. Legislative power is vested in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The Judiciary is independent of the Executive and the Legislature.
Turkey's current Constitution was adopted in 1982,
after a Constitutional referendum conducted under the auspices of a military junta (while the Turkish
military's power has decreased in recent years, the military members of the Turkish National Security
Council still maintain considerable influence over the nation's politics and policies).
